Buckle up as we take you on a whirlwind journey through our amazing week at Custer State Park, South Dakota. From close encounters with buffalo to mastering the art of paddleboarding and chasing stunning sunsets, it's been a wild ride that we can't wait to share. So grab your metaphorical hiking boots and let's dive into the tales of our escapades!
A Buffal-Amazing Start
Our week kicked off with a roar – well, more of a snort – as we drove into Custer State Park. Imagine cruising down the road and suddenly encountering a buffalo practically inviting itself to a roadside chat. We had to pause, giving Mr. Buffalo the right of way. But wait, the buffalo bonanza didn't end there. Deer decided to join the party, showing up right near our camper for a casual evening hangout. And just when we thought it couldn't get any wilder, a bird flew overhead with a freshly caught fish. Talk about an extravagant dinner delivery!
Of Lions, Ice Cream, and Nighttime Wildlife
Day two taught us that surprises are just around the corner. Who knew mountain lions were a thing here? While we didn't score a selfie with one, we did indulge in some out-of-this-world homemade ice cream in Custer town. Seriously, folks, even the waffle cones were in on the homemade charm! Our attempt at a twilight wildlife drive might have turned into more of a night drive, but hey, we got up close and personal with buffalo and even spotted an antelope. Note to self: timing is everything, especially when the sun goes down.
Paddleboarding Triumphs and Lightning Shows
Guess what? We mastered paddleboarding – with just a few minor wobbles. Being camped near Legion Lake definitely had its perks, and skimming over the water was an absolute blast. You'd think we'd retire for the night after such an achievement, but nope! We became lightning aficionados, watching a thunderstorm's electrifying dance from our outdoor seats. Nature's own light show, brought to you by Mother Nature and a side of thunder.
Paddleboarding Round 2, Hiking, and Surprise Visitors
Round two of paddleboarding was a success, despite the morning grogginess. Mornings and paddleboards might not be best friends, but hey, we're all about pushing boundaries. Lucas embarked on a hike to the Badger Hole Historical Site, probably to one-up the buffalo's wild tales. The evening brought us a serene hike around Stockade Lake, just in time for a mesmerizing sunset. And what do you know? A buffalo decided to join our campfire soirée.
Caves, Crazy Horse, and Buffalo Encore
Our inner adventurers were truly awakened as we ventured into Jewel Cave National Monument for the Historic Lantern Tour. It was an underground odyssey of awe-inspiring proportions. Navigating the Needles Highway required some vehicular yoga, but the breathtaking scenery made every twist and turn worth it. A quick hike on Sylvan Lake Shore Trail added an extra dose of wilderness wonder. Oh, and guess who popped in for another cameo? Our buffalo friend, of course.
Summit Conquests and Farewell Plans
Lucas seized the day, rising at the crack of dawn to conquer the Black Elk Peak Trail. Over 7 miles of trekking and soaring to 7,244 feet – now that's what we call a morning workout! Back at the camper, rain showers and clouds added an atmospheric touch to our day. As our week of exhilarating escapades winds down, we're packing up and gearing up for our next adventure.
